"Pursue your passions," "leverage your network of relationships," "edit and update your CV," "dress for success"... We've advised you on many things to find your ideal job. But the truth is, sometimes your job search journey succeeds because of the differences you bring to the table."
Most success stories stem from following one's passion, leveraging personal networks, and having a solid CV - but that's just a part of the bigger picture. The job-seeking journey can be as unique and creative as individuals themselves. Instead of strictly adhering to the conventional formula, simply embrace every opportunity and strive to become an impressive candidate in the eyes of employers
This doesn't mean you should disregard or completely overlook traditional job search methods. However, there's no harm in incorporating non-traditional methods to achieve your goals. For example, online interviews have become increasingly common, and you should start getting accustomed to them.
Here are 9 unique (yet effective) tips for job seekers:
1. Don't apply as soon as you find a job opening.
The feeling of applying everywhere and then feeling disheartened by not getting responses is the worst part of the job search process. When you find a position you're genuinely interested in, applying should be the last thing you do. Instead, research the company and professionals working there, network 'in the know' before you submit your application to understand the company culture and what they expect from candidates."
2. Acknowledge that you need help
You can seek advice from others. We often put pressure on ourselves to appear smart and dynamic to land a job. But try building relationships with people you want to work with, express your admiration for them, and ask for advice. This is something you should do before the company has a job opening for you to apply for.
Don't hesitate to chat or call them to express your admiration, ask about interesting aspects or challenges in their work, and then ask for advice. If they are enthusiastic enough, they may be willing to forward your job application and CV to the HR department or department leaders in need of candidates.
3. Create your own space
You can't just sit around waiting for your dream job to come to you. Research the industry or field you're interested in, and decide on 1 or 2 companies you want to join. Then, understand their challenges and limitations from your professional perspective. From there, outline solutions and share them directly or publicly (through personal blogs, for example). The idea here is to find ways to attract attention through proposing solutions to help them without expecting anything in return.
4. Learn to listen
Job seekers are often so caught up in showcasing themselves to employers that they sometimes forget to listen. The art of conversation lies in knowing how to listen - and job interviews are no different. Knowing when to speak, when to stop, and when to ask questions are skills of outstanding candidates.
When practicing for interviews, don't just rehearse scripted answers, think about how to listen carefully and reflect on what the recruiters say.
5. Start from the top.
Have you watched the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness"? Chris Gardner (played by Will Smith) always tries to approach business leaders or managers. Why wait for your CV to reach the decision-maker? Approach them directly, with a clear and respectful goal.
6. Build a relationship with the Assistant
Even if you have a promise from the manager, don't forget, the administrative assistant who arranges opportunities for you is just as important. In fact, the assistant is often a reliable partner, knowing most of the manager's schedule, responsibilities, and preferences. Making friends or even finding benefits to exchange with them can make a big difference compared to other candidates.
7. Focus on body language
You may have been reminded of it, but not fully aware of its importance. Your posture, how you place your hands - whether relaxed and confident or not - will help you exude assertiveness. Also, pay attention to the body language of the recruiter to consider if you're heading in the right direction.
8. Don't focus on finding your dream job right now
If you're fixated on finding a specific job you'll love, it might be difficult for you to find employment. Because most entry-level positions are not glamorous. The relevant question to ask when assessing an opportunity is: how can your job progress in the next 5 years if you invest in skill development? Focus more on positions where you have the most opportunities to demonstrate your abilities, build a network with industry leaders, and pave the way to step into the top companies in that field.
9. Become their biggest fan
Once you find a company you love, become their biggest fan. There is no company that doesn't want employees who love the company and are passionate about the work. Loyal fans are often enthusiastic consumers and often become great employees for this reason.
Of course, you need to establish relationships or participate in groups, forums where you can show your enthusiasm and contribution.
In general, "unique" tips should be used wisely, and attention should be paid to whether you are violating industry standards or researching the HR you intend to approach to choose the most suitable approach.
